As potters, we know that clay does not like to be forced. If you're new to using profile ribs, here are some tips and tricks on how to make it work for you, not against you.
Start: Throw a cylinder slightly thicker than the desired final pot size.
Define Foot: Hold the rib firmly and push the foot shaper portion into the base to define the foot ring.
Shape Wall: Use your inside hand (finger/sponge) to gently stretch the wall onto the rib. Do not attempt to push the rib into the pot. Instead, over multiple passes, slowly push different points of the wall onto the rib, starting with defining the widest points.
Avoid Sandwiched Walls: As the wall thins, avoid sandwiching it too hard between your hand and the rib to prevent excessive friction and twisting.
Glide & Release: Use water or slip to aid gliding. If your hand or rib feels dry, quickly release tension to prevent twisting.
